I don't see any email links anywhere, how are people supposed to contact you? People may want to send feedback without signing up for an account.

Icon-Comment funzel, 5 years and 321 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Hi, we are unsure which of our email adresses to add to this page :-) I added one of mine.

Icon-Comment sshapiro, 5 years and 189 days ago. Icon-Permalink

will this start a new thread? Can't tell - sorry if not.

I just downloaded snipsnap-0.3.2a-20030110 to try and load it on an hp-ux 11.0 system. I/m running java sdk 1.4. When I run the run.sh it tells me lib/snipsnap.jar missing, please compile application first

But I can find no instruactions on how to do that anywhere. Can I have a hint, please?

Thanks / Sid /

Icon-Comment funzel, 5 years and 189 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Well, there should be no need to compile SnipSnap. You're sure that you didn't download the source version (with -src- in the filename) ?

We test every distribution before upload and I downloaded snipsnap-0.3.2a-20030110.tgz right now which works here. Is there a snipsnap.jar in lib? Does the tgz have the right size and did decompressing work without errors?

I found SnipSnap very easy to set up but I'm having a hard time figuring out some basic things.
  1. How do I create a WebLog entry?
  2. What are labels and how do I use them?
  3. Is there a way of renaming a snip?
Thanks, -Bill

Icon-Comment leo, 5 years and 187 days ago. Icon-Permalink

  1. Click on the post blog link just underneath the websites tagline. There should be a row of links like this:
[ start | index | logged in as leo | logoff | post blog ]
  2. Labels are a means to attach meta data to snips, like categories, types etc. Unfortunately, the user interface to use the labels is not finished yet.
  3. You cannot rename a Snip. It's part of the idea behind wiki that you cannot rename or delete snips. If you made a mistake just create a new snip and refactor the content: copy the content to the new snip and create a link to the correctly named snip in the wrong one.

Icon-Comment bburton, 5 years and 186 days ago. Icon-Permalink

  1. I have no "post blog" option with version 0.3.2a:
    [ start | index | logged in as billb | logoff ]
  2. Assume then labels are to aide in finding snips when searching?
  3. Okay. This is the first Wiki and blogger I've used.
Thanks.

Icon-Comment bburton, 5 years and 186 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Figured it out. I had initialized SnipSnap under one Unix account we use for administration and then registered myself. Once I logged in as the original user, I saw the manager link and updated the profile for myself to have edit access. Now the post blog link shows up.

Thanks.

I'm having trouble setting my JAVA_Home environment variable. My Home is Hard Drive/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.3.1/Home, and I can't get to my Hard Drive on terminal. Should I . . .
  1. figure out how to get to my hard drive and then have the path be Hard Drive/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.3.1/Home?
or

2. should I copy something to my User file and then do the set env command to that location?

Any help is appreciated.

try to set your JAVA_HOME to /Library/Java/Home That should do it. I guess MacOS X ? See also Set JAVA_HOME on Mac OS X.

Icon-Comment Mark Stroup, 5 years and 180 days ago. Icon-Permalink

It's MacOS X. This is what happens:

To the terminal: mstroup% setenv JAVA_HOME /Library/Java/Home

To the server: bash-2.03$ cd snipsnap-0.3.2a bash-2.03$ ./run.sh Please set JAVA_HOME environment variable! A Java SDK of at least version 1.3 is required!

Icon-Comment funzel, 5 years and 175 days ago. Icon-Permalink

@mikeliu: Yes, this is a bug in 0.3.2 due to refactoring errors with our IDE. This is fixed in 0.3.3.

Hi all:
I use debian3.0 and blackdown java 1.3.1,amd k62 400, memory 256mb,i run snipsnap 0.3.3a, cpu always 95%~100%, this a JVM problem?, or i must replace JVM update to 1.4 version? thanks

Icon-Comment funzel, 5 years and 166 days ago. Icon-Permalink

@mikeliu: We suggest using a JDK from Sun, the blackdown JDK has some problems and is buggy, so do not use it please. Yes, please use 1.4.1 from >>http://java.sun.com/j2se/downloads.html

I have a simple question… What about internationalization? Can I translate "start" to "início" and "index" to "index"? (See… they are part of the menu…

Icon-Comment gandhi, 5 years and 157 days ago. Icon-Permalink

heheh… I mean "index" to "índice" at the last comment…

Icon-Comment funzel, 5 years and 157 days ago. Icon-Permalink

@ghandi: currently not. We're working on i18n though.

Icon-Comment gandhi, 5 years and 155 days ago. Icon-Permalink

can I work on this? I'm a java programmer.... do you have a cvs access? how can I commit changes?

Icon-Comment gandhi, 5 years and 155 days ago. Icon-Permalink

ok, I downloaded the source code and opened netbeans.. hummm… I need to start lucene, taglibs, anything else? dont you use junit?

Icon-Comment funzel, 5 years and 155 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Currently we only use Junit tests for the RenderEngine part (radeox) but add them to SnipSnap. There is currently no public CVS, we work on that. Send patches to us.

Icon-Comment dembaca, 5 years and 129 days ago. Icon-Permalink

hi,

just installed version 0.3.4a. Everything works fine. I am now trying to use a Apache server as ReverseProxy which basically works. But there are some links, that still have the original url of the snipsnap-host and not the url set by app.url in the configuration file.

Seems like only those links in snips are making trouble; login, register, etc. are ok. Is this possibly a bug with app.configuration.url defaulting to the snipsnap-host??

Icon-Comment funzel, 5 years and 129 days ago. Icon-Permalink

What URLs exactly do not work? We had to rework the app.url stuff. We'll release 0.4 probably monday. Take a look at the new version then.

Icon-Comment dembaca, 5 years and 128 days ago. Icon-Permalink

All URLs that are given as relative URLs work (of course). But where there are absolute URLs (e.g. in the snipsnap-portlet-1 box on the right side, or all the meta tags in the page header) they all default to the snisnap-host - ignoring the "app.url" configuration.

I'll try 0.4 then and let you know if it's ok. Thanks.

Icon-Comment nobody, 5 years and 127 days ago. Icon-Permalink

just installed 0.3.4a and used the installation instructions on this site. but here's what i am getting: >>http://www.poetryexchange.com:8000/

seems like the html is not getting parsed.

Icon-Comment funzel, 5 years and 127 days ago. Icon-Permalink

@nobody: this is known and fixed in the next release.

Icon-Comment nobody, 5 years and 126 days ago. Icon-Permalink

thanks. how are other people getting this to work? any clues?

Icon-Comment leo, 5 years and 126 days ago. Icon-Permalink

They either use 0.3.3a or wait for the currently prepared 0.4a release.

Icon-Comment nobody, 5 years and 123 days ago. Icon-Permalink

  • Remove the {calendar} macro from snipsnap-portlet-1
  • Take a look at the server.log and send me errors or the whole file.
Did you do a fresh install or an upgrade?

Icon-Comment nobody, 5 years and 123 days ago. Icon-Permalink

yeah. removing {calendar} macro fixed it. this was a fresh install.

i can't find an e-mail address where i can e-mail the log to.

Icon-Comment jonw, 5 years and 123 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Just installed 0.4a on Mac OS X 10.2.4. Install and configure was easy.

I have a suggestion for a couple of the macros. It looks like isbn, asin, and rfc do pretty much the same thing. There are many other search types people probably want to do. It would be neat if there was one macro (locate?) that took in a service type (url or isbn or asin or music or ebay or ...) and an identifier (like isbn number). The text file in conf would have to add a service identifier to each line. Additionally, it would have an insert identifier in each line (like $identifer) that would let the macro insert the identifier at that (or multiple) points in the line to create the search URL.

Nifty product even so, though.

Icon-Comment funzel, 5 years and 122 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Two reasons not to do this:
  • We think {isbn} is easier to use for users than {service:12121|isbn}
  • {rfc} might include new params to point to a chapter in a RFC, {isbn} might be configured to create a order form in your intranet should the book not be available in your library. They might be the same on the basic level.
Perhaps someone does this {service} macro as an easy way to add functionality to SnipSnap without writing Java code.

Thanks for the "nifty" :-)

Icon-Comment sam, 5 years and 119 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Could you please tell me how can I configure the layout of the right sidebar of my snipsnap?

Thanks.

Icon-Comment funzel, 5 years and 118 days ago. Icon-Permalink

@sam: Depending on the theme you chose just edit snipsnap-portlet-1 (or snipsnap-portlet-2). Enter 'portlet' into search and then click on the snip (snipsnap-portlet-X) in the result. Then click edit.

Icon-Comment sam, 5 years and 118 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Thanks. Do you have marco to change color of some words of a sentence? my understanding is you have marco for bold but not color marco?

Icon-Comment funzel, 5 years and 118 days ago. Icon-Permalink

@sam:: warg wrote one, see Contributed. I think it doesn't work with newer versions than 0.3.3 :-(

Icon-Comment olli, 5 years and 118 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Yeah in April I will switch over all my sites to 0.4 at the moment I'm busy with my own projects.

Icon-Comment sleach, 5 years and 117 days ago. Icon-Permalink

I am trying to build the 0.4.1a source, and after adding srcdir="src" to the jspc target on line 308 of build.xml to fix one build error, I now get this repeated:

ava] 2003-03-26 08:28:55 - error-the file 'snipsnap-0.4.1a/src/apps/default/upload.jsp' generated the following parse exception: org.apache.jasper.JasperException: This absolute uri (>>http://snipsnap.com/snipsnap) cannot be resolved in either web.xml or the jar files deployed with this application

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Icon-Comment sleach, 5 years and 117 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Never mind, I found the CVS build instructions, I was using ant 1.5.1, I upgraded to 1.6alpha

Icon-Comment sleach, 5 years and 117 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Another question :)

I want to disable registering on the site, what is the best way to do it? I had thought of hacking the register.jsp file, but is there a setting I am missing?

Thanks

Icon-Comment funzel, 5 years and 117 days ago. Icon-Permalink

No there is currently no configuration for this. I'll add this to the next release because some others wanted this feature too.

Icon-Comment funzel, 5 years and 116 days ago. Icon-Permalink

@sleach: Done in CVS. You can now add app.perm.register=deny to application.conf .

Icon-Comment sam, 5 years and 115 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Hi, What is the marco use to create a block for " index | logged in as leo | logoff | post blog" inside Leo's post above?

is it {code}?

And how can I create my own marco on top of the ones in snipsnap? Is there some kind of config file for that? Or I need to download and modify the source?

Icon-Comment funzel, 5 years and 115 days ago. Icon-Permalink

@sam: It's {code}...{code}. Just click on the bubble to the left of a comment to see the source code of the comment.

I don't know what you mean with 'on top' but take a look at Developer and Macro tutorial there.

I use ant 1.6alpha and jdk 1.4.1_02 on linux. Using the binary distribution works fine (but I'd like to potentially make changes, thus build from source)

ps: I'm also having trouble accessing the cvs code bas (error from server, see >>http://snipsnap.org/comments/SnipSnap+CVS+Access#comment-SnipSnap%20CVS%20Access-6 ) and I tried to subscribe to snipsnap-dev but did not get any acknowledgement (yet)

hello snipsnappers, since there is no snipsnap forum or mailinglist - maybe this snipsnap space is the correct place to post my questions.
  • I have a lot of different stuff my snipsnap wiki. Now I would like to do a index or search on all persons only, or an index on all concepts. How can I do this? I have tried to do something with "label".. but this doesn't appear to work or I am doing something wrong. So now I am just adding codes within the snipsnap text so I can search for the codes to come up with the results I want, it's ugly - do you have a better idea?
  • Somewhat related to the above: can one remove the snipsnap snippets and the blog date snippets from displaying in the index?
  • About the 0.4.2 binary release I installed yesterday. I get a little rectangle positioned on the top rightend of each snippet that I think isn't supposed to be there (snipsnap.org has it too, but it's been greyed!!) and also the orange theme has some essential parts missing. Can you bring back the google snipsnap snippet query? I miss it so much!
  • About modifying the layout, in the install one can choose three basic layouts - can these be changed radically afterwards or do I have to dive into the source code later? I have seen the css files, but I don't think I for example can change the portlet-1 location currently on the right to the left.
  • Embedding images into a snippet with a space in it, for example: "Jim Morrision" do not appear to work (or I cannot figure it out). I've tried image-Jim+Morrison-jim.jpg and image-Jim-Morrison-jim.jpg and both don't work. (image-Goatrance-goaparty.jpg on snippet "Goatrance" works). The pictures would be nice to have with the little biography snippets.
  • How can I make an e-mail address turn into a mailto link? A >>http://*.org link just works!
Last but not least: thanks for the great software! With "wget -r -l0 -m -k" I can flatten the whole thing, do a cosmetic search and replace and upload it to a non-dynamic non-java http site or archive it for use on my pocketpc.

Icon-Comment leo, 5 years and 109 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Let me try to answer your questions:
  1. The first two are related to Labels which we are working on. In the meantime there is the search field. Using "author:leo" you should be able to only search those of the author leo.
  2. The little rectangle is a CSS glitch. It is the space where attached file names appear, see comment-version-0.4a-12. The google and daypop links just disappeared as there were too many of these buttons. We will put them back in on public request.
  3. You can safely edit the css stylesheets. After editing them you should package the files in the css subdirectory together somewhere for backup. I suggest waiting a little bit as I just modified the layout (for blue theme) to make moving the portlet from right to left very easy.
  4. Embedding images should be done by using the [attach] of a snip and then using the file name as it is uploaded {image:Jim Morrison.jpg}
  5. I would not add email addresses to public pages but we can modify the URL detection to accept the mailto: protocol.

Icon-Comment darkcycle, 5 years and 109 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Thanks Leo! Maybe the snipsnap development team can make the google and daypop links userconfigurable, leave it up to the user - just like the mailto (or maybe it's indeed better to do a spamfree 'at' mail address or none at all). Thanks for the embedding images tip! But now I have a little dillema.. on some snippets I have documents and zip files attached and it's a bit ugly to have the attached files box inside a snippet with a picture. But when I do the magic css trick all attached file boxes disappear. Also how can I de-attach files from snippets.. without recreating the snippet from scratch?

Icon-Comment leo, 5 years and 109 days ago. Icon-Permalink

I will make the attached files box so that it only appears on snips with attached files. If you can live for a little while with the ugly little box ...

Deleting attached files right now only works by removing them in the WEB-INF/files directory. However, they will still be seen in the upload page. Deleting comes with the next release as well as the detection of missing files.

Icon-Comment Dennnis, 5 years and 108 days ago. Icon-Permalink

I installed 4.2a on a Xserve and a Sun server, both where very easy to install. I have two questions regarding the user.
  1. Can a user be deleted?
  2. Can a username be changed?
I ask the latter because I mistakenly registered as Dennnis when I meant to use Dennis as my username. Further, I have users on my system that have done the same. Please advise.

Icon-Comment leo, 5 years and 108 days ago. Icon-Permalink

  1. A user can be deleted in the "User Management" of the manager administrative web frontend. The user will be deleted but his home snip will stay. Keep in mind that persistence is a major factor in a wiki (yes, we need versioning).
  2. a user name cannot be changed, delete it and create a new one.

Icon-Comment Dennnis, 5 years and 108 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Mea culpa! Leo, your response was so simple that I couldn't believe it! As it happens, I was using the sky theme and my browser window did not show the "remove" button. The window was too narrow. Upon expansion, there was the "remove" button. When will the left sidebar, blue theme be ready?

Icon-Comment schwabe, 5 years and 103 days ago. Icon-Permalink

I have a site, running under Windows NT 4, where I have a Snip where I would like people to be able to attach files freely. The problem I am getting is that they are getting a "user unauthorized to attach", or something like this. I have already changed the permissions in the Files directory under WinNT, allowing everyone to read/write/execute, but apparently this is not enough. I couldn't find anyplace where authorizations are controled, other than making everyone an editor.

Any sugestions?

Icon-Comment baz, 5 years and 99 days ago. Icon-Permalink

You may have to set Admin privilege to your user (use it at your own risks).
  1. Login as manager
  2. Click on 'User Management'
  3. on your user : click on Action 'Edit'
  4. change Roles:
check the Admin box

Q:How is used 'Status:' not set ?

Hello.

I just installed SnipSnap. So I have some newbie questions. First of all, what should I do to translate it to my language? Is there something like Application.properties? I read about language-packs, but can't found it. Don't say I have to patch source code! ;-)

Second. Many kinds of blog-ware allows to monitor selected threads. Is it possible to recieve comments posted on my snaps?

Third. At /WEB-INF/lib of newly created site I found muse-jabber-0.8a1.jar library. It's interesting for me, what feature of SinpSnap requires it?

That's all, thank you for attention.

P.S. Sorry for my english, it's not my native english.

Icon-Comment funzel, 5 years and 63 days ago. Icon-Permalink

@alesk: could you contact me using email?
  • There is no language refactoring right now, but if you need it very urgently then we might start ASAP :-)
  • No, currently no monitoring. We have to rework the whole notification stuff which currently only support Jabber IM when new snips are created
  • see above. Jabber is used for notification
  • Sorry for my english, it's not my native language too :-)

Hello

I just started with snipsnap.

I programed a simple {math}{math} macro which outputs (static test) mathml code. To get it to run I've to change some of the *.jsp pages.

My question is, which environment do you use to "precompile" the *.jsp pages?

For example in post.jsp I have to change the <br> element to < br />

In main.jsp I have to change the DOCTYPE to be mathml "conform", ...

Icon-Comment tmoertel, 5 years and 40 days ago. Icon-Permalink

I just installed SnipSnap, and I must say that it is indeed cool.

I have a couple of questions:

  • I zapped a page, and yet it still shows up in "see also" snip listings. How can I remove it for good so that users aren't encouraged to click on an orphaned link?
  • What are the rules for using ampersands and XML markup in snips? (The reason I ask is because I used an ampersand in a snip name and SS didn't replace it with a character reference when making links to the snip. I got validation errors all over the place.)
Thanks for your help!

Hi SnipSnap team,

I'm looking for an open source solution for WIKI and BLOG to be integrated into OpenUSS platform (>>http://openuss.sourceforge.net).

How tight is actually the "user management" in SnipSnap architecture? I need to take out all the user managements and just use SnipSnap as a naked component...

Thanks, Lofi. >>http://openuss.sourceforge.net

Icon-Comment funzel, 5 years and 39 days ago. Icon-Permalink

@guest: This is a great idea. I don't know how you could use SnipSnap as an component, is more or less an application with only the render engine as a library (Radeox). But user management is done with an Java Interface called UserManager and and UserManagerImpl class which currently uses SQL but could be changed to use another authorization backend. We probably move this to JAAS with Jetty plus.

Icon-Comment guest, 5 years and 38 days ago. Icon-Permalink

OK, thanx. After reading the architecture, it seems that snipsnap uses only 1 servlet? So, it could be very easy to customize?

Anyway, I'll download the code and look directly into the code.

Thanx, Lofi, OpenUSS.

Icon-Comment funzel, 5 years and 38 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Only one servlet?

Icon-Comment liz, 5 years and 35 days ago. Icon-Permalink

On my install, the blog function only lets me comment by day, not by entry. Which is pretty frustrating if there are a lot of entries per day. Unfortunately, I didn't do the install myself - I'm checking up on this for the person who did - but I bet this is just a config problem. Is there something we should change in application.conf to enable us to comment on individual entries?

Tx, Liz

Icon-Comment funzel, 5 years and 35 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Currently one day is one snip and so you can only comment on one day, not every post. This is works in our developer version and with the next release 0.5

Hallo, I was installing snipsnap 0.4.2a on a RedHat 8.0 box with j2sdk 1.4.1_03. Installation with >>http://ip-adress:8668/install was fine, but as soon as I try to login and configure the right window with snipsnap-portlet-1 I get redirected to snipsnap.org ? What did I do wrong? Do I need to edit some config files?

Icon-Comment leo, 5 years and 20 days ago. Icon-Permalink

This is strange. The code does not redirect you to SnipSnap.org but if the referrer is pointing to snipsnap.org when logging in you may be redirected to it. This can happen if you came to the login page from snipsnap.org and not from the local page. Try reloadting you local /space/start page and login then.

Icon-Comment gebhardm, 5 years and 19 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Hi, I found out, what the problem is. If you take a look on the links in the left side you´ll see that the snipsnap server IP-Adress is used. If you take a look on the links at the right window you´ll find that NOT the IP-Adress is used but the servername!! So if I try to access from a remote machine (I currently don´t use DNS) it fails to resolve the name to ip-adress. And I first used snipsnap as servername so this might be the reason why it did redirect to snipsnap.org. But this inconsistency should be fixed, it´s not clever to use IP-Adress for one link and the servername for another link.

I had a wonderful idea for a navigation menu in snipsnap; I thought it would be nice to have a hierarchical menu that will display sub menu options related to the page you are viewing. So based on the page that is displayed, the menu wil display its sub-menu's. It is just like a fold-open menu.

To make this work, the macro needs to know which page is displayed, no problem, since the macro can find out which Snip the macro is in. However, when I put my menu in snipsnap-portlet-1 it can only find out that the macro is in snipsnap-portlet-1, but I really want to know which main snip (or page) is display.

Is there a way that my macro can find out which page is displayed? Maybe the URL or something?

Is it possible to turn off comments, or would source have to be hacked?

Icon-Comment ryan, 4 years and 364 days ago. Icon-Permalink

@goo0h: on my snipsnap ( >>http://snarfed.org/ ), i've effectively turned off comments by hiding them with CSS. put this line in css/page.css, or any other css file that's linked in by default.css:

div.snip-post-comments { display: none; }

i've also turned off backlinks, sniplinks, attachments, and a few other things this way. i might upt them back eventually, but i think i'm happy with it right now.

I'm trying to get snipsnap set up so that we can very easily set up and administer multiple snipsnap spaces (each with its own blog, etc) from one server. We want to consolidate user management but allow people to have a lot of control over their individual spaces. What would be the best way to do that? Is that be the "MultiBlog" mentioned in the Feature Matrix?

Tx, Liz

Icon-Comment phobia, 4 years and 360 days ago. Icon-Permalink

I think this will require namespace security.

Icon-Comment liz, 4 years and 358 days ago. Icon-Permalink

The snip linked to "namespace security" begins with the word "assuming." Does this mean that namespace security is built in already, or not? If not, what does "multi blog" actually mean?

Icon-Comment funzel, 4 years and 358 days ago. Icon-Permalink

No this is not built in. Multi Blog currently means several (distinct) SnipSpaces on one server. This is what you might need. Each space has it's own user management though (we have no other user manager like LDAP etc yet)

In the next relase multi blog also means several blogs in one space.

Yes this could be done with namespace security. People could have their own spaces with e.g. stephan/MyHouse or stephan/Sister etc. with rights management based on namespace security.

When is the next release planned for?

Icon-Comment funzel, 4 years and 357 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Next month probably. leo has to finish WAR and I have to fix two bugs that haunt me for 1 month now and can't be fixed. So 0.5 should have been released some time ago.

Icon-Comment kimbly, 4 years and 349 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Very cool project. I got redirected here after I >>posted about wanting some combination of a blog and wiki. You've got some really cool ideas here.

Anyway, I have a bug report (or feature request). It's annoying that the zap! link doesn't confirm, and doesn't fix up all the other links to the page that got zapped. Also it should be illegal to zap! the "not found" page. It's only been a couple hours, and already I've accidentally deleted the 404 page (I double-zapped), so now whenever it can't find something, I get an infinite redirect loop in my browser!

Icon-Comment funzel, 4 years and 349 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Welcome.
  • What do you mean with "fix up all other links"? At the bottom of the page?
  • Yes the 404 page should be protected. The next version (CVS) supports auto-create pages instead of 404 btw. Could you please add a bug report for the 404 to >>http://bugs.snipsnap.org ?

I posted this in the k-logs comments section, too, but it looks like this section gets checked/updated more frequently. Sorry for the spam.

I want to like SnipSnap… I really do. I want to use it as a knowledge management tool for my software development team. I'm new to the concept of a Wiki, though, and one problem is absolutely baffling me:

How do I create an article?

I know that if I post to my blog with a link thispagedoesnotexist, I will get the opportunity to create that page. But what if I just want to create an article and have it linked from the index?

Please help!

Thanks,

Russ

I guess this page describes how to create snips. I added this field onto my portlet page so that it's obvious to everyone how to create a snip. Seems to work great!

I hope this september. We work very hard.

xmpp? I'm usually online with IRC, AIM and sometimes Jabber.

Icon-Comment senikk, 4 years and 310 days ago. Icon-Permalink

XMPP stands for Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol the open protocol used by jabber. As stated on the Smack Library forum the prober term is XMPP since that's the name of the open protocol and Jabber is a commercial term from a single company.

Icon-Comment funzel, 4 years and 310 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Ic. I moved from Fire to iChat which does not support XMPP. Fire has a lot of problems with XMPP so I don't use it any longer.

It seems that I am just to dull to run SnipSnap. I installed it on Linux with JDK 1.4.1, started it, created a admin user. I can also insert weblogs but I cant create new pages or links using [NameOfPage]. Why? Also other macros cant be used, e.g. {link}, SnipSnap just shows nothing.

What I am doing wrong?

Icon-Comment funzel, 4 years and 252 days ago. Icon-Permalink

@boris: I would say this is the old jython bug, send an email to stephan@mud.de and I get you a working jython.jar. Otherwise remove the ORO classes from jython.jar on your own.

Icon-Comment Karingo, 4 years and 225 days ago. Icon-Permalink

I think, you should allow each user to have a blog on one server. Will you ever allow this? You also need a page for comments.

Icon-Comment beachboy, 4 years and 216 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Not sure if it is better to post a comment or send you e-mail so I will do both.

I am having a strange issue deploying snipsnap. It centeres around there being multiple hostnames for the machine I am setting up. When I run the run.sh script it chooses one of the names, not the one I want either, which is a non-qualified name. So when I go to use the qualified name to run the install process it works up until the point of sending me to the working site, then it fails to find the name, since it is not the fully qualified name. When I type in the fully qualified name it gets me to the application page and all seems well, until I try any of the links and they too are pointing to the non qualified name. Any ideas on how I can get this to use the fully qualified name ***.org instead of just *** which is what it is doing? Your assistance would be great, thanks, Ken.

I have a few questions. The first two interrelate:
  1. Do I need my own server when I download SnipSnap? It looks good,
especially as a basis for extension. But will I need to change my dialup Earthlink account at home to one of their co-hosting accounts where I provide, maintain, and admin a server of my own?

2. I'm extremely interested in setting up an email address that I can send blog posts to. I know that would be an extension, but I'm curious to know how difficult you would expect it to be, and how it would affect question #1.

3. I notice that Wiki links are done with square brackets. The usual Wiki concept is that any word with mixed case (like thisWord) is a wiki word that is automatically linked. I'm curious to know why you decided to use square brackets instead. Was a simple case of ease-of-programming, or was there some additional thought behind that choice?

Thanks much.

How lovely like email with a "take it back" feature. This comment was a correction to the comment above but then I realized I could just go back and edit that comment!

(I don't see a way to delete this one, though...)

Icon-Comment leo, 4 years and 212 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Hello Eric,
  1. right now you will either need your own server or a computer where you run snipsnap on. You don't need a dedicated "server" though.
  2. SnipSnap supports Mail-to-Blog where you can setup an email address and SnipSnap fetches mail via POP3 from that account and posts it on the weblog.
  3. You can setup SnipSnap to support WikiLinks. However, this requires a recompile. We decided for the bracketed linking because it is just as simple to understand and does not break the beauty of the text. Also, you can use more complex links with spaces and punctuation.

Hello, Congratulations, SnipSnap is a cool application. I would like to know if is possible use it like a VeryPersonal(tm) content manage. I want to use it only from my computer but use it while I am connecting to Internet. Is possible configure SnipSnap for using it only from localhost and prevent other people to connect my SnipSnap?

Thanks in advance.

Icon-Comment leo, 4 years and 207 days ago. Icon-Permalink

You need to configure SnipSnap to ONLY listen on localhost. If you have the latest code (I guess CVS) you should start with using >>http://localhost:8668/install/xxxx?expert=true and enter "localhost" into the Host field. SnipSnap will then refuse connections from the internet. At least that is what it should do :-)

Icon-Comment salaso, 4 years and 207 days ago. Icon-Permalink

yes, in 0.4.2a it should be easy to enter in the optional field for host "localhost" and you are done.

Deletion is not part of the concept. Just leave it. I can delete the "user" if you want but this will have to wait until next year.

Leo, Funzel,

I just installed 0.5a and I have a few difficulties is mapping 0.4.2a stuff to the new version… things like:

  1. How do I manage users?
  2. How do I import in 0.5a snips exported from 0.4.2a? (I think that the current install instruction do not cover the snips piece)
  3. How do I create a new snipsnap application?
I think that the only issue here is that the documentation available at >>http://snipsnap.org is still mostly 0.4.2a old so we're stuck with almost no user info.

TIA for your help and happy new year.

Cheers, F.

PS: by the way when are you planning to upgrade >>http://snipsnap.org site to 0.5a?

Icon-Comment philmich, 4 years and 197 days ago. Icon-Permalink

Hi all,

just installed snipsnap 0.5a and now I'm playing with it. I have some questions regarding themeing:

-During installation and also now, in setup, I do not have choice between themes. Even though it claims that three themes ship with snipsnap, I can only select the blue one. How do I get the others?

-I tried extracting the theme css files from the src tgz. Supposedly these files should go into applications/YourApp (which in my case I guess is _8668_?)/css. However, that directory is not present. It seems like the blue css files are snips themselves than can be edited, i.e. page.css is actually a directory on my hard disk, not a file. It's all rather confusing and I don't know how I could install theme files myself.

Some help would definitely appreciated! Thanks and keep up the great work!

-P.

Having the label and add file buttons on the button bar is a little difficult, but you can play with the CSS to get the stuff below the content.

We've been using SnipSnap for a while now as part of a KM experiment. Rather than the refactoring you mention in Bottom up Knowledge Management we've been using the traffic to organise snips into clusters. This seems an interesting alternative and gives an overview of developments in the knowledge space. Our demo project has an order of hundred snips (only a few of us involved) and we do not know if this idea would scale to a full size project. Is there anyway we could try it out on the SnipSnap site? Either give us an XML database dump or we try to sort out the very badly coded spreadsheet we've been using to make matrixes of snips and number of links between them and pass to you.

When I perform a search, results that are weblogs are displayed as ordinal values (ie 1,2,3). I'd love if these displayed the title of the blog posting instead of these values. That brings me to this issue: when to blog and when to snip. I would like to post a blog for each support issue my team addresses and have it available to be searched. This would also be easier if I could link a blog to a category. Should I just copy it to a snip everytime?

Is there a way to get SnipSnap to recognize files placed directly into it's directory structure (through the command line) instead of the normal way (through the web browser)?

Here's the background of my question. We had an older version of SnipSnap that crashed before we made an XML backup. We stored the data on the file system, we did not use a database, so we have the old snips on the file system. We have tried copying the old snip files into the new SnipSnap installation's directory structure but SnipSnap does not seem to recognize the files. So that is how we come to the question above.

We have just installed SnipSnap version 1.0b1 on Solaris.

Thanks for any hints.

Hi all,

I'm using 0.5.2a and I have 2 questions:

1) How do I add a link to a binary file (e.g. Word doc), either to a blog or a comment? Is there a macro for this? I tried to upload the file and create a link to it but that doesn't work.

2) Why can't I delete a registered user even though I'm the admin?

  1. upload the file. There is currently no {attachment} macro, but you can use the {link:space/snip/attachment.doc} to link to the attachment.
  2. The user must be logged off at the moment.

Hi:

Is there a command line program which I can run to export the database? Currently I only know about doing this through a browser by going to Admin - Setup - Export Database. Just yesterday, I lost all my data created that day because SnipSnap suddently asked me to setup again after unexpected computer reboot.

If there is a program which I can run on command line, that will help a lot. I want to schedule a task on Windows to backup/export data everyday or every few days. If there is none, could it be possible that you can come up with one? I guess it probably wouldn't be difficult to write a stand-alone Java program taking admin username/password to
